I offer the best of what has been heard to those who listen — hear with understanding this mahākāvya called Kirātārjunīya, the finest poem on earth.
Then the great ascetic performed austerities in that forest — master of his senses, his breath controlled, his self disciplined, his food restrained.
Having brought desire and anger under control, pondering only dharma, he practiced fierce austerities — fasting, sleeping on the ground, seated in meditation.
Shiva's body, wearing the guise of a hunter, was veiled in illusion — it did not reveal its true nature. Seeing him approach with bow in hand, the great warrior Arjuna rose in astonishment.
Then Arjuna, seeing the hunter, took up his sharp arrow and stood firm in battle — fearless and undismayed.
Then the great lord Shiva, pleased, granted him the mighty arrow — the Pāśupata, destroyer of all weapons.
