Autobiographical — Chapters II-III

This Revelation was shewed to a simple creature unlettered, living in deadly flesh, the year of our Lord 1373, the 13th day of May. It was shewed, as to my sight, for the behoving of me that desired it, and for the behoving, also, of all mine even-Christians that shall be saved: for God seeth that we be all one in charity, as Holy Church teacheth us.

I desired to suffer with Him, and to live to God, in the faith and love of His blessed Passion, knowing that all the pains that I might suffer were but little in comparison with His blessed Passion. And this desire of the Passion was in my mind continually, and I desired also, by God's grace, to be enabled to have more knowledge of the bodily pains of our Saviour, and of the compassion of our Lady, and of all His true lovers that were living at that time and saw Him suffer.

And in this desire, I had a bodily sight, and from that time I had a spiritual sight, which continued at all times, the same, and doth so still. And in this spiritual sight I saw, as I may say, the revelation of God's meaning: that is to say, the Love that maketh Him to love us.

In this same time of my youth I desired to have been delivered from this life. But then came to my mind the Passion of Christ, and I thought: "If I may be so privileged as to have here some knowledge of the very pain of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the compassion of our Lady, and of all His true lovers that saw Him suffer, then methinketh I should have patience and comfort."

And in this I had a feeling of the Passion of Christ, but I desired to have a bodily sight, wherein I might have more knowledge of the bodily pains of our Saviour, and of the compassion of our Lady, and of all His true lovers.

The First Revelation — Chapters IV-IX

The Crown of Thorns

And anon after this I saw the bodily sight of the plentiful bleeding of the Head. The great drops of blood fell from the Garland like pellots, seeming as it had come out of the veins. The quantity of the blood was so great, that I marvelled to see how there was any left in His body, for as much as I saw was full plenteously shed, and nevertheless it seemed to me that it was but a part of the blood that was in His blessed body.

The fair brown skin of our Lord was all broken full deep into the tender flesh, with the sharp smiting of the scourging, in so much that the tender flesh was rent and torn, and the warm blood ran out so plenteously that all the skin, that I saw, was fully and wholly rent from the precious body. And in many places where the skin was torn from the flesh, it was rent and torn from the very bone. And in the places where the skin was whole, it was rent in great rents, so that I saw the warm blood running out plenteously.

The Hazel Nut

And in this He shewed a little thing, the quantity of an hazel-nut, lying in the palm of my hand, as it had seemed. And it was as round as a ball. I looked thereupon with eye of my understanding, and thought: What may this be? And it was answered generally thus: It is all that is made. I marvelled how it might last, for methought it might suddenly have fallen to nought for littleness. And I was answered in my understanding: It lasteth, and ever shall: for God loveth it. And so all thing hath its being by the love of God.

In this little thing I saw three properties. The first is, that God made it; the second, that God loveth it; the third, that God keepeth it.

But what is this to me? Methought: I am a creature in God, and I am a creature that is loved of God, as all other creatures are. And in this I saw a great thing, as high as it is: that God is the same love that loveth all things. And I saw that love is God, and God is love. And this love was shewed in all things, and specially in all the fair things that be shewed. And this love was never known, nor shall be known, without great beholding. And in this beholding, love is shewed to the soul, so that the soul may see love, and love may see the soul. And thus it is known, that God is in the soul, and the soul is in God.

"All Shall Be Well"

But notwithstanding all this, I marvelled, and was in dread, for I thought: If God is thus, and is so good, how is it that sin hath any being? And I could not see this. And I was answered in my understanding, saying: Sin is behovely, but all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.

And in this I saw a great comfort. For I saw that He shewed not this to me for me alone, but for all that shall be saved. And I was taught in my understanding: We be all one in love. For I saw full surely that we be all one in God, and God is in all. And this is a great comfort to all that shall be saved.

The Second Revelation — Chapter X

In this He shewed me a little thing, the quantity of an hazel-nut, in the palm of my hand; and it was as round as a ball. I looked thereupon with the eye of my understanding, and thought: What may this be? And it was answered generally thus: It is all that is made. I marvelled how it might last, for methought it might suddenly have fallen to nought for littleness. And I was answered in my understanding: It lasteth and ever shall, for God loveth it; and so hath all thing its beginning by the love of God.

In this little thing I saw three properties. The first is that God made it, the second that God loveth it, the third that God keepeth it. But what is to me verily the Maker, the Keeper, and the Lover?—I cannot tell. For till I am substantially united to Him, I may never have full rest nor very bliss: that is to say, till I be so fastened to Him that there is right nought that is made between my God and me.

The Third Revelation — Chapter XI

I saw that God never began to love mankind. And I saw that as verily as God is endless, as verily He loved mankind: yea, that is to say, ever. For just as verily as God is the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, and endless, so verily is He our Maker and our Keeper and our everlasting Lover.

And I saw that the love which God hath for mankind is so great, that it surpasseth all understanding. For He made all thing for love, and by the same love He keepeth all thing, and shall keep all thing without end.

The Fourth Revelation — Chapter XII

In this He shewed me a fair sight, and a delectable and a full of comfort. Our Lord shewed me the soul of a worshipful creature in the endless love of God. I saw the soul large as all the world, as large also as the Kingdom of Heaven. And by the conditions that I saw, I understood that it is a worshipful City.

In the midst of that City sitteth our Lord Jesus, God and Man, a fair Person, of a large stature, the most worshipful of all. And He sitteth in the soul, even reigneth in the soul, even as a King in his throne. And He ruleth and governeth all things in the soul, and all things in the Kingdom of Heaven, and all things in the world, by His blessed will.

The Fifth Revelation — Chapter XIII

After this I saw the blessed Body of our Lord, as I had seen before, sitting upon the Cross. And I saw that the blessed flesh was rent and torn, and the precious blood running out, so plenteously that it seemed as though all the blood that was in His blessed Body were shed. And this was the fifth Revelation, that was shewed for to strengthen my faith in the blessed Passion of Christ.

And in this I saw a great comfort: for I saw that He suffered this for love, to bring us to endless bliss. And I saw that this is a great joy, that we have a God that is so good, so gentle, so courteous, so kind, and so loving to us. And I saw that this love was never beginning, and never shall have ending.

And I understood that love is our Lord's meaning. And I saw in this showing that love is the meaning of all things, that ever were made, that ever are, and that ever shall be. And this was a great comfort to me.

The Meaning of the Whole — Chapter LXXXVI

From that time that it was shewed, I desired oftentimes to know what was our Lord's meaning. And fifteen years after and more, I was answered in spiritual understanding, saying thus:

"Wouldst thou learn thy Lord's meaning in this thing? Learn it well: Love was His meaning. Who shewed it thee? Love. What shewed He thee? Love. Wherefore shewed it He? For Love. Hold thee therein and thou shalt learn and know more in the same. But thou shalt never know nor learn therein other thing without end."

Thus was I learned that Love was our Lord's meaning. And I saw full surely in this, and in all our Shewings, that Love was His meaning. And in this learning I saw that it is speedily the knowing that is most needful to us. It is Love. For of all things that we see, the best is Love; and the most needful to us is Love; and the most rejoicing to us is Love; and all that is good and fair, it is Love.

And I saw certainly that this was shewed, and that all this was shewed for Love. In what manner, I saw not. But in the Shewing of the Passion, I saw the reason of all: that is to say, He loveth us. For it would be an unpossible thing that we should have any sorrow or any ill, but if it were for Love. And therefore was all this Shewing of Love.

Thus was I learned that Love is our Lord's meaning. And who so loveth God, and liveth in love, he liveth in God. And God liveth in him. And I pray God of His great goodness, and by the great power of His blessed Passion, and by the precious blood that He shed for us, that He would grant to me, and to all my even-Christians, that we may live in love, and die in love, and come to the endless bliss that shall never have ending. Amen.
